PIIAPAC is one of three important areas of our industry-leading government relations program: a strong presence at the capitol by our lobbyist, the active grassroots participation of our members and financial assistance to deserving candidates. During the past several years, your Association has enacted several laws directly benefiting your agency, including:
- Codifying in state statute your agency’s ownership of their expirations.
- Changing from an annual to a Two-Year License Renewal.
- Enacted significant producer liability reforms, including a two-year statute of limitations on civil actions against producers (Errors and Omissions) and limitations on fiduciary liability.
- Legislation prohibiting the use of credit scoring as a sole criteria for issuance or non-renewal of personal lines policies.
- Enacted legislation giving producers more flexibility in charging fees.
- Carry-Over hours for Continuing Education.
- Enacted legislation regulating Employee Leasing Companies and their underwriting and marketing of insurance, including workers compensation coverage.
- Repealed Illinois’ antiquated and costly Structural Work Act.
These are only a few of the positive changes accomplished by our association.
As important -- but often not emphasized -- are those proposals detrimental to independent agents and our industry, which the PIIAI has defeated. These include:
- Defeated SB 2016, Garrett (D-Lake Forest) which would have imposed onerous and complicated disclosure requirements for all agent/broker compensation and several other legislative attempts to regulate producer compensation.
- Administration’s proposal to create 1% tax on all commercial lines policies to fund local law enforcement training programs.
- Legislation that would eliminate an agent’s contract through acquisitions and mergers.
- Legislation regulating insurance rates in Illinois.
- Legislation permitting commercial insurance to be sold in group policies.
- Proposals to enact another level of bureaucracy with a Consumer Insurance Board and an elected director of insurance.
- Numerous proposals to mandate expensive coverages and procedures on small group and individual health insurance policies.
The monies contributed to the state PAC, PIIAPAC, are collected by the state association and contributed to state legislative (state senators and representatives) and constitutional officers, i.e. Governor, Lt. Governor, Secretary of State, etc.
Our national association, IIABA, collects their political action monies separately and independent of PIIAI. InsurPac, contributes only to federal candidates, i.e. your Congressmen or U.S. Senators.
If you have contributed in past years, thank you for your commitment. Due in large part to generous contributions from agents like you across the state of Illinois, the PIIAPAC continues to be a viable medium to voice the independent agents’ views in the General Assembly. Your financial support, together with hundreds of your fellow independent agents, will help elect and re-elect candidates who share our business philosophies.
Remember, your PAC dollars have elected independent agents to the General Assembly during the past ten years. Please help your association continue its record of success by including your PAC contribution on your PIIAI membership dues or click here to print a contribution form.
